This William Laskin 'Rower from Above' cutaway steel string guitar was built during 1989 in Toronto, Ontario and is a wonderful demonstration of Laskin's skill in both guitar building and complex engraved inlays.
Beginning with a more or less standard Laskin body design (influenced by Jean Larrivee and Edgar Monch), this guitar is built with a Sitka Spruce top, Indian Rosewood for the sides and back and Maple or Satinwood for the body binding. The body blocks, linings and neck are Mahogany, with Ebony for the bridge and grained-ivoroid fingerboard.
From there, Laskin adds complex, custom engraved inlays following discussions with the person commissioning the instrument. Here, a theme of 'Rower from Above' was selected. The engraved Rower is seen on the headstock, with the bow of the scull extending past the second fret. Waves then are seen further down the fingerboard at frets five, seven, nine and twelve. Examining how the inlays are constructed, materials include Mother of Pearl in various grades, Abalone, Burl Walnut, and Maple. There is also a engraved, monogrammed heel cap. For hardware, tuners are the original Schaller M6 set, and a TrueTone pickup set has been installed to an endpin jack.
This is a beautiful example of William Laskin's work, and it also plays well and sounds quite good. Its voice is rich, full and well developed throughout the range.
Presently 35 years old, there is some wear. Some natural finish checking is seen, there is a dent near the bass end of the bridge. Fret wear is light.
The original brown arched-top hard shell case is included.
