At The Twelfth Fret, we welcome instruments on consignment. With nearly 50 years of experience, we’ve successfully connected sellers with buyers for thousands of vintage and used guitars, mandolins, banjos, ukuleles, amplifiers, and more. 

Consignments keep our inventory dynamic, offering a constantly changing selection of rare and gently used instruments. Our busy store on the Danforth in Toronto attracts a steady stream of local customers as well as international visitors. With a client base of thousands of players and over 20,000 unique daily website visitors, we’re well positioned to help sell your instrument.

Our Consignment Policy & Details

To keep everything clear and transparent, we use a written consignment agreement that sets out all terms in detail.

Our Formal Consignment Outlines: 

• The selling price.
• The payout price to the consignor.
• Any agreed-upon repair or service costs.
• Instrument details and specifications so our staff can properly guide potential buyers.

Pricing

We assist consignors in determining a realistic resale price range for their instrument. The final price will be based on your specific circumstances and how quickly you wish to complete the sale. 

Because every instrument and every sale is unique, the specific terms of a 48-hour approval may differ.

Commission Details

We charge a 25% sales commission for consignment instruments valued at $1,000 or more. For instruments under $1,000, a flat fee of $250 applies. Vintage effects pedals are priced differently, and the flat rate can be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

We request that instruments remain with us for a minimum of 60 days. If an instrument is removed before this period, a $200 administrative fee will be charged. Most instruments sell within the first 30 to 60 days. 

How We Market & Sell Your Instrument

Our sales come from both our busy in-store showroom and our global online sales and shipping service.

New consignments are highlighted in the “Just In! Used & Vintage” section of our website and initially featured on our Instagram and Facebook social sites.

Under our consignment terms, any external advertising for your instrument must refer interested buyers to The Twelfth Fret.

If the instrument is sold by you or through another party while under consignment with us, a $200 administrative fee will apply.

Consignment Payouts

Payment to the consignor is typically issued by cheque on the Wednesday following the sale. If you prefer, we can also arrange to wire funds to your bank or apply your payout as in-store trade credit.
