Here we have a William Laskin Flamenco Negra guitar, built in Toronto during 1987 in the traditional style using a Spruce top, Indian Rosewood back, sides and bridge, Spanish Cedar neck and Ebony fingerboard.
William Laskin has been building guitars since at least the early 1970’s, and was one of the early staffers with Jean Larrivee, along with many other now-prominent Canadian luthiers.
The Laskin Flamenco Negra is built using a Sitka Spruce top and as a 'Negra' model pairs this with Indian Rosewood for the back and side set, and Cedro or Spanish Cedar for the neck, linings, and back bracing. Spanish Cedar, also known as Cedro (Cedrela odorata) is neither Spanish or a Cedar, but a member of the Mahogany family.
Construction is the traditional Spanish ‘slipper foot’ style – the neck, heel and neck block are one unit, with the sides slotting into the heel. This is in distinct contrast to other methods where the neck and body are built separately, often using a dovetail or mortise and tenon joint. The head plate and binding are Ebony, and the fingerboard is Ebony with Ebony binding. The bridge is Indian Rosewood.
For hardware – well, there isn’t much, the traditional Flamenco guitar is pretty bare-bones. The tuners are by Rubner with creme buttons.
This excellent instrument has been used as intended, but not abused. Fret wear is moderate. The finish is light, and as Flamenco tends to be an enthusiastic or physically expressive style, there are a few marks on the top and light wear to the back and neck. A small crack on the top near the treble side of the tail block was repaired long ago, and a small top crack above the linings on the treble edge of the waist. To protect the top, a set of thin clear plastic golpe plates have been added.
This wonderful guitar plays well, is light and responsive, projects well and has a full, well developed voice. As a Flamenco Negra model its tone is fuller and somewhat less percussive than traditional Blanca models, with more bass midrange and sustain.
A molded hard shell case is included.
