The Veillette Minotaur Bass is a low production short scale bass built in Woodstock, NY, this example dating to 2012 and still in the catalog, though current versions use a different bridge and tailpiece setup. Veillette's history is interesting and involves a number of figures deeply involved in the development of modern American guitar culture.
While it is offered in a variety of woods and finishes, this Veillette Minotaur Bass uses a compact body with a quilted Maple cap and unfigured Maple back on a Poplar core. The 30.71 inch (780mm) scale length Maple neck has a Macassar Ebony fingerboard with zero fret; the combination bridge and tailpiece is also Macassar Ebony. Tuners are a Gotoh set and are very smooth. The finish is an amber tinted lacquer and is in very good condition with light wear.
The electronics combine a (Harvey) Citron magnetic pickup at the neck and piezo bridge element, feeding to a D-Tar Blender 2000 pre-amp powered by two 9-volt batteries; the controls are on the bass side waist. This preamp system was designed by Seymour Duncan and the late Rick Turner, founder of Alembic along with Owsley Stanley and others, all involved in the Grateful Dead's instruments and sound systems.
This interesting bass is in overall good condition with light wear. Strung with flatwounds, fret wear is light. The bass plays very well and has a great sound with a wide range of tones. The original Veillette-branded gig bag is included.
Veillette Guitars was founded by Joe Veillette, who left architectural school in 1971 to work with Michael Gurian. In 1975 Veillette-Citron Guitars was formed with fellow student Harvey Citron. They built many instruments for prominent players of the time, and this lasted until 1983. At that point Veillette shifted to a focus on performance. In 1991 he partnered with Stuart Spector to make Spector basses, leaving in 1995 and soon partnered with Michael Tobias (who currently makes Tobias basses) and designed a range of instruments for Alvarez, and formed Veillette Guitars. All of the primary workers at the company are active in performance and recording, and have been for years which gives them a thorough understanding of musician's needs.
