This Vega Fairbanks Regent 5-String Openback Banjo from 1913 is a fine example of early 20th-century American banjo craftsmanship.
The Fairbanks name became synonymous with innovative and well-crafted banjos during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1904, after a fire destroyed the Fairbanks and Company building, they were purchased by the Vega Company, who continued this tradition of excellence, using both the Vega and Fairbanks names initially. The Regent model was introduced as part of Vega's line of premium banjos, designed to cater to professional musicians and serious enthusiasts.
The Vega Fairbanks Regent 5-String model's reputation for quality has endured over the decades, with many players and collectors valuing it for its exceptional sound and historical significance. Whether used for traditional banjo styles or as a collectible, the Vega Fairbanks Regent remains a distinguished example of early American banjo artistry.
This Regent features a high-quality maple rim construction. A traditional rolled brass Spun-over tone ring gives this banjo a nice balanced sound and good projection. The neck is crafted from maple giving it both stability and warm tonal qualities and has a rounded profile for comfortable playability. The fingerboard is made of ebony with mostly dot inlays except for a lotus style inlay at the 5th string, made from mother-of-pearl. The headstock is plain without any inlay, and supports high-quality friction tuners. The banjo is equipped with Nylgut strings, a traditional Elite metal tailpiece and has a standard 11-inch head made from calfskin giving it a distinctive sound. This banjo shows some signs of age, with some general wear and tear but overall it is in good solid playing condition.
