Description
Built during 2008, this spectacular Tom Anderson Drop Top SSH features a Quilted Maple top with a Bora Bora to Blue Burst finish and gold plated hardware. Most Anderson guitars have a degree of customization, and this example includes the 'Switcheroo' circuitry offering enhanced control over pickup selection.
This instrument is in very good, clean condition with vanishingly light wear, sold with its original hard shell case containing COA, strap, trem spring and manual.
The Anderson Drop Top electric guitar, introduced in 1990 quickly established itself as their flagship model, offering boutique quality, versatile tones and enhanced playing comfort. The dual strap buttons on the bottom of the guitar form a very stable support when the guitar is leaning against something, and should prevent a number of accidental spills.
Like other Anderson models, this guitar is built for the patented Buzz Feiten system allowing for improved intonation and tuning throughout the guitar's range.
Overall this striking guitar is in very good condition. Wear to the Anderson 'Heavy' style (Jescar 51108, described as 'medium jumbo) frets and finish are very light and the guitar plays well.
Materials and Construction
Based on the classic S-Style design, the Anderson Drop Top pairs a highly figured Maple cap with one of several types of woods for the body back. Typical offerings are Mahogany, Ash, Alder, and Basswood. This specific guitar uses Alder for the body back and Maple for the neck, with Rosewood for the fingerboard.
The neck joint is unusual for this type of construction, relying on what Anderson calls the 'A-Wedgie' two-bolt neck joint which locks the neck into position in three dimensions.
The hardware is gold plated. The head gets a set of locking Anderson branded tuners with the lock located on the post top, while the bridge is an Anderson-branded vintage style trem, currently set as 'decked'.
The electronics feature Anderson SF1 (neck and middle) and HF2 (bridge) SSH pickup set. There are Master Volume and Tone controls, and the Switcheroo system, using four external switches and one set of internal DIP switches. The first is a 'Blower' switch under the volume control, bypassing all other controls and activating the bridge pickup in full-output Series mode. Next there are three three-way switches, one for each pickup. In the 'Down' position, the pickup is on and its coils in series. In the center position, the pickup is off. What these three switches do in the upper position, split or parallel, is physically programmable by the owner via three mini DIP switches inside the rear control cavity.
As mentioned, this guitar is designed for use with the patented Buzz Feiten system, which consists of a set of specifications for nut position (shifted slightly towards the first fret), saddle offsets, plus tuning and intonation offsets. It's very helpful to have a high quality tuner that's also designed for use with offsets, such as the Peterson strobe line.
The body and colour-matched headstock finish is a UV-cured type allowing a thinner total coat load. The recipe combines dual-cure sealer, acrylic urethane colour coats, and polyester/acrylate top buffing/gloss coats. Neck finishes, on the other hand, are a thinner satin for a smoother feel.
