This spectacular and rare Tom Anderson Drop Top 7 SSH was built during 2010, with a deep quilted Maple top and Bora Bora Blue finish and 'Switcheroo' circuitry. The body is the proven combination of Basswood with Maple, and the Maple neck has a Maple fingerboard and stainless steel frets. It delivers the boutique quality, versatile tones and enhanced playing comfort of the Drop Top line.
The Drop Top 7 has been built in small numbers, mostly as special orders, since 1999.
Overall this striking 7-string guitar is in excellent, clean condition with very light wear. The stainless steel frets - standard on the model since 2004 - are a 'Heavy' size and predictably they show virtually no wear.
This instrument is accompanied by a 'Mono' brand gig bag.
The dual strap buttons on the bottom of the guitar form a very stable support when the guitar is leaning against something, and should prevent a number of accidental spills.
Like other Anderson models, this guitar is built for the patented Buzz Feiten system allowing improved intonation and tuning throughout the guitar's range.
Tom Anderson Drop Top 7 SSH Materials and Construction
Based on the classic S-Style design, the Anderson Drop Top 7 pairs a highly figured Maple cap with one of several types of woods for the body back. Typical offerings are Mahogany, Ash, Alder, and Basswood. This specific guitar uses Basswood for the body back and Maple for the neck and its fingerboard. The frets are stainless steel.
The neck joint is unusual for this type of construction, relying on what Anderson calls the 'A-Wedgie' two-bolt neck joint which locks the neck into position in three dimensions.
The hardware is chrome plated. The head gets a set of locking Anderson branded tuners with the lock located on the post top, while the bridge is a 7-saddle version of a standard 'hardtail' component.
The electronics feature Anderson SF1 (neck), SF1R (middle) and and H2+ (bridge) SSH pickup set. The wiring includes Master Volume and Tone controls, and the Switcheroo system, which uses four external switches and one set of internal DIP switches. The first is a 'Blower' switch under the volume control, bypassing all other controls and activating the bridge pickup in full-output Series mode. Next there are three three-way switches, one for each pickup. In the 'Down' position, the pickup is on and its coils in series. In the center position, the pickup is off. What these three switches do in the upper position, split or parallel, is physically programmable by the owner via three mini DIP switches inside the rear control cavity.
The body and colour-matched headstock finish is a UV-cured type allowing a thinner total coat load. The recipe combines dual-cure sealer, acrylic urethane colour coats, and polyester/acrylate top buffing/gloss coats. Neck finishes, on the other hand, are a thinner satin for a smoother feel.
As mentioned, this guitar is designed for use with the patented Buzz Feiten system, which consists of a set of specifications for nut position (shifted slightly towards the first fret), saddle offsets, plus tuning and intonation offsets. It's very helpful to have a high quality tuner that's also designed for use with offsets, such as the Peterson strobe line.
