Here is an exceptionally good sounding, beautiful Skip Peyre Grey Eagle F5 Mandolin, serial number 35 with a tight Sitka top, dated to July 27 2009 at his early shop in Malone, New York State.
Taking their name from a classic bluegrass tune, Skip Peyre Grey Eagle mandolins are rare and wonderful instruments. Peyre built the Grey Eagles in three styles - F, A and Two-point, and with F-holes or Oval holes. After doing early work in Malone NY, he moved to Richmond, Virginia, somewhere between late 2009 and 2011.
Custom Inlays
This example features personalized inlays commissioned for the original buyer and executed by the late master artisan Dave Nichols, who operated his famous Custom Pearl Inlay shop in Malone and handled the legendary "Custom Shop" pearl work for C.F. Martin Guitars for decades.
The headstock bears the image of a favorite dog's face in finely engraved mother-of-pearl, and the end of the fingerboard features a "For Tim" inlay, also in mother-of-pearl. Tying this custom theme together beautifully, the standard position markers have been replaced with a series of inlaid pearl paw prints!
Condition and Playability
Overall this lovely instrument is in good condition, with honest play wear to the finish and very light fret and fingerboard wear. The frets are clean enough that it may have recently had a fret dress. It plays very well, and has a great sound, warm yet brilliant and punchy, with lots of projection and volume.
An Eastman branded hard shell case is included.
Materials and Construction
This Skip Peyre Grey Eagle F5 Mandolin uses traditional F style construction. The top is very tight grained Sitka spruce, paired with well-figured, bookmatched curly maple. The neck is also curly maple with Ebony for the bound fingerboard and head plate All of the inlays are Mother of Pearl. The compensated bridge is also Ebony.
The tuners are gold coloured with engraved plates and faux pearl buttons. The tailpiece is also gold coloured but with a satin finish and Grey Eagle stamped into the cover.
