Built in Toronto during 1987, this Scott Shepherd cutaway classical showcases the builder's skill and attention to detail in his work building and repairing.
Scott Shepherd, now retired, worked for many years repairing instruments at all three locations of The Twelfth Fret repair shop. His work is very clean and precise.
This guitar is in overall good condition with some expected wear to the finish including lacquer checking. There is a slight separation along the centerline of the top extending from the bridge. The neck profile is somewhat rounder and feels slimmer than traditional European classical guitars, more like a Laskin than a Ramirez.
Tonally, the instrument is well balanced with good representation throughout the harmonic range.
Sold with its original hard shell case.
Materials and Construction
Starting with a standard Spanish style body shape, this Scott Shepherd cutaway Classical pairs a Red Cedar top with Indian Rosewood for the back, sides and body binding. The top's double-X style bracing influenced by Charles Fox and his Guitar Research & Design Center in South Stafford, Vermont.
The body blocks and neck are Mahogany, while the linings are Spruce; the rear braces and center strip are Cedar. The cutaway is a rounded Venetian style permitting access to the 16th fret, past the standard 12th fret body joint. In total, there are 21 frets with the 21st being a half-width extending over the soundhole. There is an adjustable truss rod, accessed through the sound-hole. The neck joint is a dovetail, and the headstock is a spliced section of Mahogany, providing resistance to breakage. The fingerboard, bridge, head plate and heel cap are Ebony.
The nut and saddle are bone, and the tuners are Schaller. There are no electronics installed.
