Here is a Santa Cruz D12 Maple Acoustic Guitar from 2014.
Legendary artist and first call session ace, Norman Blake, has long appreciated
the power and sensitivity of the original dreadnought design with 12 frets clear of
the body. The prototype D-12 Model was commissioned to showcase Norman’s playing style by adding clarity and sustain for an articulate response to the flat pick. Building a guitar with 12 frets clear of the body creates more air volume, which allows greater amplitude and sustain. The hand tuned X-bracing ensures an increased bass response, while the top voicing and 4-1/4 inch sound hole size combine to achieve great presence in all ranges. This eliminates the tendency of the traditional dreadnought towards boominess at the expense of midrange and treble. The Flamed Maple sides and back impart clarity and definition to the guitar’s complex acoustic presence. The D-12’s sheer volume, complexity, and incredible sustain make it a truly inspiring stage partner.
This exquisitely customized Santa Cruz D12 twelve fret Dreadnought features a
master-grade Bear claw - figured Italian spruce top with Adirondack spruce
bracing and hide-glue assembly, highly figured flamed maple back, sides, and
neck; Herringbone and ivoroid accents and a full-sunburst, full gloss lacquer
finish. It’s a glorious guitar, with tone and feel to match its great looks.
Santa Cruz builds their 12 fret dreadnoughts with an ear towards string balance,
fundamental presence and clarity, and a bass-end response that doesn’t absorb
all of the guitar’s energy at the cost of mid-range and treble power. Anyone who
appreciates a big-bodied guitar that offers balance, power, and huge headroom
along with the warmth and bass response of a typical D would be remiss not to
try this guitar out. It’s a remarkable sounding machine that offers flatpickers
everything they want, but also offers the warmth and overtone richness
demanded by fingerstylists.
This D-12 is built with a slightly thinner body that has a depth of 4-3/8” at the
endpin and a 1” taper, and a soundhole diameter that’s increased to 4-1/4”.
These are two of the less obvious secrets to this guitar’s incredible tone.
The two-piece bookmatched maple neck has a wonderfully comfortable C-carve
and a nutwidth of 1-3/4”. The scale is 25.4” and the string spread at the bridge is
2-3/16. The ivoroid-bound ebony fingerboard is dressed up with slotted diamond
inlays, and the ivoroid-bound ebony headstock overlay features a pearl Santa Cruz
logo. Schaller open-geared tuners and a well adjusted bone nut offer smooth and
predicable tuning.
This example is in very good overall shape with only very minor cosmetic play wear and comes with the original Ameritage hardshell case.
