The Rickenbacker 660/12 TP Tom Petty built from 1992 to 1997 as a special run of 1000 instruments, reached the guitar seen here, #930 of 1000 on April 21, 1997.
This example is in very good, clean condition with the lightest wear. The original rectangular silver hard shell case by G&G contains a letter from Rickenbacker attesting to the authenticity and date of the guitar.
The 660/12 was first introduced as a limited signature model, based on Mike Campbell's 1963 625/12. A major difference was a significantly wider fingerboard at 1.75 inches, with vintage style hardware, hot-wound Toaster Tops, gold finished pickguards and truss rod cover, and a vintage toned FireGlo finish.
Once the signature run was complete, a regular production run began with the 660/12 entering the catalog, where it still resides, with lower gain pickups, standard white pickguards and truss rod cover, and a full range of Rickenbacker colour offerings.
Rickenbacker 660/12 TP Materials and Construction
The Rickenbacker 660/12 TP Tom Petty uses three wood types - figured Maple and Rosewood, with two small Walnut extensions to fill out the headstock profile.
The construction is a neck-through type with a single center piece forming the neck and body core, and two Maple wings to create the cresting-wave body shape, and walnut to widen the headstock. The headstock uses Rickenbacker's standard alternating 12-string tuner mounting scheme.
For hardware, the 660/12 TP Tom Petty uses two 3x3 sets of 'Ric Deluxe' Kluson style tuners, an early 60's style flat plate trapeze tailpiece, 12-saddle bridge with cover and two-level pickguards.
Electronics start with a pair of custom high-output (about 12K) Toaster Top pickups and the standard five-control wiring setup. The wiring is only Mono, 'Ric-O-Sound' stereo outs were not offered.
