This Mike Ramsey Woody Oak Tree 5-string banjo is an open back traditional style banjo with frailing scoop, Maple tone ring, rim and neck with an Oak Tree themed engraved inlay set. This example was built in Appomattox, Virginia around 2000/2001.
Construction and Materials
Here we're looking at a Mike Ramsey Woody Oak Tree 5-string banjo with frailing scoop and four capo tacks, in very nice condition. It was built in Appomattox, Virginia around 2000/2001. It is built with Maple for the 12 inch rim, paired with a flamed Maple neck and Ebony for the fingerboard and head plate. The finish is a thin clear coat with a cherry tint. There are 26 tension hooks around the rim.
An engraved Mother of Pearl and Abalone inlay set featuring an Oak three theme gives the model its name. The headstock inlay is the tree itself, the first fret inlay an engraved Maple leaf, the fifth and octave fret markers is are Oak leaf clusters with acorns. Frets 3, 7, 10, 15, and 17 have engraved Mother of Pearl dots.
The tuners are Five Star planetary models, and a no-knot tailpiece is at the base. All the metal parts are nickel plated.
This fine banjo is in excellent condition, has has had no repairs and wear is vanishingly light. It plays well, and has a deep, warm tone.
The original black arch-top hard shell case by TKL is included.

"This model is designed with a wooden tone ring attached to the wooden rim. The combination of a thicker rim and a wooden tone ring produces a very pleasing tone, with plenty of volume and a complete sound of its own."
About Mike Ramsey:
Mike Ramsey began building banjos in 1986, and in 1990 shifted to full time banjo production in Lebanon, Ohio. In 1994 he moved to a new shop in Appomattox, Virginia, and again in 2005 to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Around 2010, he moved to Pittsboro, NC. For a time, he sold his banjos through Elderly Instruments under the name Chanterelle. Mike Ramsey died in 2021.
