Ramirez FL2 Flamenco Blanca Guitar Natural, 2014 [USED]

The Ramirez FL2 Flamenco Blanca guitar is a traditional Flamenco Blanca model, built to provide brilliant, percussive and loud rhythms at brisk tempos. This model, and its new replacement the Estudio Flamenco “Serranito” are the only ‘Student’ Flamenco guitars offered by Ramirez. These modern examples are not strictly bound to tradition - they are built with a classical-style headstock and geared tuners, rather than the carefully fitted wooden pegs. This is a considerable improvement!

This Ramirez FL2 example dates to 2014 and is in excellent condition with only the slightest wear. It plays well and cleanly, with the low action required for the Flamenco style.

Flamenco is now very professional and formalized, but is at its roots a folk style combining highly expressive, rhythmic percussion and melody using voice, dance, hand claps, finger snaps and guitars. Some drum type instruments, particularly the Cajon, are now also used. It is one of the most exciting music forms to see live, and always provides a good reason to take a trip to Spain.

Flamenco Blanca guitars feature lightweight construction and use of Spruce for the top, Cypress for the back and sides, and Spanish Cedar or ‘Cedro’ for the body blocks and neck. The bracing and construction is focused on delivering a fast, crisp attack with lots of presence in the mid-range and bass. The fingerboard is Ebony, with Palisandro or Rosewood for the head plate and bridge. Flamenco Negra models use Palisandro, or Rosewood for the back and sides, and have a slightly warmer tone. These are often seen in modern Flamenco styles and in genre-crossing ‘World Music’ contexts. Tuners are gold plated models with faux-Mother of Pearl buttons by Van Gent who have made quality tuning machines for many years.

In all cases, the geometry of the Flamenco model differs from Classical models in that the neck angle is designed to provide low action. This is partly to allow and encourage Flamenco’s typically enthusiastic fast playing, and partly because the rattling of the strings against the frets is an essential part of the tone and percussive effect.
