This Ramirez 1a long scale concert classical guitar, built during 1972 in Madrid, exemplifies what is meant by a truly professional, concert grade instrument. Under the fingerboard tag is the stamp “17,” identifying the builder as Enrique Borreguero Marcos.
The Red Cedar-topped 1a design was developed in the early 1960s by José Ramírez III to meet the demands of the world’s most accomplished players, including Andrés Segovia.
Construction, Materials and Condition
This guitar was completed shortly after José Ramírez III expanded the shop to Concepción Jerónima No. 5 in Madrid to accommodate growing demand. However, the label reads Concepción Jerónima No. 2, as both addresses were in active use at the time. This arrangement continued until 1995, when leasing issues prompted the move to the current address at Calle de la Paz 8.
Showing honest wear from professional use, the guitar is in good condition overall. It features a long 667 mm (26.26") scale length and a 54.1 mm (2.13") nut width.
Built using the traditional Spanish slipper-heel construction, the instrument has a Spruce-braced red cedar top with Brazilian rosewood back, sides, headplate, and bridge, a Spanish cedar neck, and an ebony fingerboard. The Brazilian Rosewood sides are lined with Cypress to increase strength and stability while reducing overtones. The original Fustero tuners remain in place.
At some point, cracks in the lower bass side of the back were professionally glued and cleated. The top shows marks consistent with Golpe technique, along with small impressions behind the bridge tie block from string ends contacting the soundboard. There is fingerboard wear from long use, with light fret wear, and the neck finish is worn where the player’s thumb made contact.
The guitar plays cleanly and comfortably, with a well-developed, mature voice. The action is set for concert performance—intentionally on the higher side to allow strong right-hand attack without string buzz.
Current action measures 9/64" on the high E, rising to 11/64" on the low E. The saddle is relatively low, so further reduction of the action would be limited.
An Alvarez gig bag is included, but we carry a range of quality hard shell cases including this example by Hiscox.
