Still in good playable condition, this Ramirez 1a Flamenco Blanca guitar was built during 1969 at the Concepcion Jeronima No. 2 shop and bears the AM stamp of Antonio Martinez Ortega. Ortega's guitars were favored by players including Andres Segovia, Laurindo Almieda and Christopher Parkening.
This longer scale (656mm) instrument has been used as intended over the last 56 years and has a full, very well developed voice. As a Flamenco guitar, the action is set to a low height and is very comfortable to play.
Sold with a brown Everest hard shell case.
Construction and Materials
This Ramirez 1a Flamenco Blanca guitar is built in the traditional style with the gradual advances made by the Ramirez family builders. The 'Slipper foot' method of mounting the sides and back to the neck is naturally used. The top is Western Red Cedar, a wood whose use was pioneered by Jose Ramirez III at the prompting of Andres Segovia. This wood is felt to provide greater projection and harmonic depth compared to Spruce, and develops its voice faster.
As a Flamenco Blanca guitar, the sides, back and linings are Cypress. The neck and body blocks are Spanish Cedar, Cedrela odorata, in reality a member of the Mahogany family. The fingerboard is Ebony, while the bridge and head plate are Brazilian Rosewood.
The tuning pegs look very much like traditional friction fit models but are PegHeds! These wonderful internally geared tuners provide all of the appearance of traditional pegs with none of their quirks.
A set of clear plastic Golpeador or tap plates has been installed to protect the top from Golpe - tapping - damage. As well, a small protective piece of the same material was placed behind the tie block to protect the top from string damage.
Over the years, a repair has been done to the tail section of this guitar, visible as an extra panel added to the sides at the tailblock. An early owner had a pickup installed, and a later owner had the pickup and mounts removed. That process resulted in this well-done repair.
