We don't see a lot of European electric guitars here, but this Nik Huber Rietbergen Adam Miller Flame Redwood top, 2019 illustrates how good these instruments can be.
Built for the Australian fingerstylist, this first version (2018-2019) of the Adam Miller Signature was based on Huber's standard Rietbergen model, featuring a set Mahogany neck and a carved Flamed Redwood top in place of the standard Maple, an Indian Rosewood fingerboard and a pair of Lollar Gold Foil pickups. (Later models from 2024 - 2025 use a bolt-on Maple neck and Kloppmann mini-humbuckers).
For the Rietbergen model, Huber forms the back, sides, center, tail and neck blocks by routing and carving a block of mahogany. Then, the top is glued on and carved. This model uses a carved, solid Flamed Redwood top with a pair of F-holes.
This is the same way that the Gibson CS-336 is built, and a similar concept to the Rickenbacker 360 and the Fender Telecaster Thinline, though the Rickenbacker and Fender are routed from the back not the front. On this example, the back appears to be from a single large billet of ribbon mahogany rather than being built up of several joined pieces. Interestingly, the Rickenbacker 360 and Telecaster Thinline were both designed by German luthier Roger Rossmeisl.
The neck on this example is joined via a long tenon that extends into the center block and has a smoothly curved heel and an attractive stepped transition from back to heel. The head plate appears to be Richlite, with the Nik Huber logo in Mother of Pearl. The truss rod cover is Ebony,
For hardware, tuners are Schaller GrandTune open gear models with ebony buttons and Nik Huber etched into the plate below the crown gear. The nut is bone. The bridge and tailpiece are a premium wireless tune-o-matic and stop tailpiece set in satin Nickel plate.
The electronics are straightforward and use a pair of Lollar Gold Foil pickups fed to a standard three-position toggle switch followed by master volume and tone controls, and a side-mounted output jack.
This is an exceptional instrument. It has all the solid sustain of a solidbody, and the open tone and acoustic volume of a semi-hollow. The fretwork is very well done and it plays smoothly with good clarity and separation between notes.
The original arched top hard shell case is included.
About Nik Huber
Nik Huber comes from a family with around a century of woodworking experience, and was formally trained as a cabinetmaker to qualify for an architecture apprenticeship. However, after attending the respected (and spectacularly located) Formentera Guitar School around 1993, he changed course to guitar making. Nik Huber Guitars was established in 1996 and in 1997 appeared at both Frankfurt Musikmesse and the summer NAMM shows.
