DESCRIPTION:
Built during the 1974 in Toronto, this six-course Michael Schreiner Vihuela is a wonderful example of reproduction Renaissance instruments.
This very well made instrument is built with a Cedar top, and Indian Rosewood and Holly for the sides and back. This combination of Rosewood and Holly is repeated in both the neck and headstock. The fingerboard, bridge and friction tuning pegs are Ebony; the pegs sport an ivory cap and dot decoration on the button. The frets are ivory. In traditional style, the soundhole rose is a complex lattice design and there are five marquetry crosses on the top. Just visible through the lattice is the label, reading Michael Schreiner and 1974. This lovely instrument is in very good condition and plays well. There are repaired cracks in two of the back ribs bracketing the tail block. The finish is an oil varnish, which Michael Schreiner still uses.
The original period Japanese hard shell case is included.
Originating in Spain during the 15th century, the Vihuela grew in popularity until the 17th century with the rise of another instrument, the Baroque guitar. The number of courses varied from five to seven with six being the most common, and they were always doubled.
Traditionally, woods used were generally local or from specialized international trade.
Tops were often Spruce or Cypress and featured carved complex rose pattern soundholes and often - as seen here - had marquetry decorations. Drawing from lute construction techniques, the sides and particularly the back were made of multiple sections or ribs, often Cypress (which is still used for Flamenco Blanca guitars), Walnut or Maple. Cypress was also used for necks, with Ebony a common fingerboard material, More elaborate instruments would use exotic imported materials as available.
