Description
Built in Montreal late 2023, this Michael Kennedy Concert steel string guitar is in very good condition and an excellent demonstration of the builder's skill.
Using a Concert size body - a bit wider than an OM but smaller than a Dreadnought - this Michael Kennedy Concert is in very good, clean condition with only the very lightest wear. It plays well, and has a good though undeveloped voice with plenty of separation between notes.
Sold with its original deluxe double-arched hard shell case, containing keys and humidipacks.
Materials and Construction
This lovely guitar pairs a Lutz Spruce top with Narra wood (Pterocarpus indicus) for the back, sides and head plate, and the upper bass side has a sound port. Mahogany is used for the body blocks, linings and neck, with Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. The rosette and bridge inlay are Spalted Maple.
The top also features a modified Tornavoz, in the form of a ring or short wooden tube projecting under the soundhole into the guitar about 17mm or .67 inches. Based on a brass cone device introduced by Antonio Torres, this is intended to improve bass response. The truss rod cover is a small strip of figured wood, held in place magnetically.
The guitar top is internally signed and dated near the lower bass edge of the soundhole. The date 'November 20 2023' is printed in mirrored text - read plainly in a mirror - while the signature is not.
The sides use a 'Structured' construction, where the kerfing extends from the top to the back, and internally covered by a veneer. This makes the sides extremely rigid allowing the top's energy to remain there.
The elevated neck uses a hybrid tenon and bolt system, making any eventual service to the neck angle a much simpler task.
About the Builder
After graduating in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, Michael Kennedy took a three year apprenticeship with master luthier Sergei de Jonge starting in 2005. Moving to Montreal, he formed the Mile Hill Guitar Coop with Jeremy Clark, who had also apprenticed with Sergei. Michael Kennedy Guitars was previously known as Indian Hill Guitars.
