This Martin J-40 Jumbo steel string guitar dates to later April 1992 and was built at the Martin plant in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the back, sides and headplate, and as typical, Mahogany for the body blocks, linings and neck, with an Ebony bridge and bound Ebony fingerboard dressed with hexagonal, abalone position markers.
A guitar can still surprise you. After handling several 000 models recently, we picked up this Martin J-40 and were struck by its depth and power. These relatively unusual guitars sound fantastic and are under-appreciated.
The Martin J-40 appeared in 1990 as a reworking of the J-40 M introduced in 1985. Though the J body is not a lot bigger than a triple-0, it has a remarkably full bottom end and midrange presence delivered without hesitation. The top end is as bright and sparkly as you would expect from a Sitka Spruce top.
The bridge plate was replaced long ago, and in the process of removal the top was distorted slightly; there is a lacquer touch-up behind the bridge. Possibly at the same time a small binding separation at the bass side waist was repaired. The finish has natural and expected lacquer checking, and fret wear is light - this may have been re-fretted at some point.
The action is comfortably low, with some saddle protruding. An undersaddle piezo pickup has been added, with the battery bag attached to the neck block.
The Martin J-40 is a fairly ‘classy’ guitar, yet with some restraint; the hexagonal inlay set is done in Abalone, with a single Abalone ring in the rosette to match. The tuners are stock Martin and gold-plated.
This guitar is in good shape with light play wear and light fret wear. It has actually been played, and sounds like it, with a well developed voice.
The original black molded Martin hard shell case is included.
