The Martin D-76 Bicentennial Limited Edition steel string acoustic guitar is a vintage Martin dreadnought produced in 1975 and 1976 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the United States. The first 200 Martin D-76 Bicentennial models were built in late 1975, with another 1,976 in 1976. This is a historic limited edition model within the Martin lineup.
This fine vintage Martin dreadnought acoustic guitar was built in late 1975 at the historic Martin facility in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. As number 0027 of the 200 produced that year, it is one of the earliest examples.
It is in overall good condition, with some honest finish play wear and a repaired, characteristic Martin pickguard top crack.
Fret wear is minor, and this guitar has had the almost-inevitable neck reset providing comfortable playability. During this process, the bridge was removed, the top apparently oversprayed, the bridge replaced, and the original pickguard was replaced with a new guard.
Tonally, it has a well-developed voice delivering a rich, full and open sound.
The original blue molded Martin-branded hard shell case is included and contains the original pickguard.
Construction and Materials
Based on the classic D body design, this Martin D-76 pairs a Sitka Spruce top (Adirondack was also available) with head plate, sides and three-piece back of Indian Rosewood; the back sections and the rosette have Herringbone separators.
The body blocks, linings and neck are Mahogany, with Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. Unique to this model, the fingerboard position markers are small five-pointed stars in Mother of Pearl, and an engraved Mother of Pearl Eagle is inlaid in the head plate.
The tuners are a nickel-plated Grover Roto-Matic set.
At the time this Martin D-76 Bicentennial guitar was built, Martin was still using a fixed metal channel as a neck stiffener. Adjustable truss rods appeared throughout Martin's range in 1985. Truss rods, fixed or adjustable, compensate for string tension along the neck but do not address stress at the neck joint and cannot prevent the eventual need for a neck reset.
As well, during this period Martin installed the pickguard and masked it off before finishing the top. This often led to a distinctive shrinkage crack when the top and pickguard contracted at different rates. Martin now glues the pickguard to the finish, which prevents this crack. Here, the original pickguard was removed from the guitar, put in the case, and a new pickguard reglued to the top.
