This Martin D-28S with Brazilian Rosewood in natural finish was a 12-fret, slotted head Dreadnought built during 1969 and is in good condition with minor fret wear and expected finish checking. One top crack was repaired long ago.
This guitar plays well and has a very good, full and rich sound.
The Martin D-28S was built with Brazilian Rosewood until late 1969 with serial number 254497, and may have been the very last regular production Martin guitar to use that wood. The D-28S model first appeared in 1954 with one guitar built, and the numbers increased until it was added to the catalog in 1968, and finally discontinued in 1993. The 1968 catalog describes the D-28 as "Reproduced from patterns drawn in 1917", which refers to the Style 111 and 222 built for the Oliver Ditson Company in small numbers between 1917 and 1930.
The 'S' designation may mean 'Standard', but that 'Standard' really refers to the original style of Dreadnought construction, not how ordinary Dreadnought models were made at the time. The original style used a 12-fret to the body neck and a slotted peghead.
Sold with a non-original TKL hard shell case.
Materials and Construction
Like most other Martin guitars of the period, the D-28S paired a Sitka Spruce top with Brazilian Rosewood for the sides, back, and head plate. The body blocks, linings and neck are Honduran Mahogany, and the unbound fingerboard and bridge are Ebony.
The neck is a 12-fret style, which locates the bridge closer to the center of the top, increasing volume and harmonic content. The headstock is slotted, a reference to both the original Style 111 and 222 for Ditson and Martin's 12-strings. At this point, Martin was still using a fixed stiffening bar for the truss rod.
The tuners are Grover Slimline V-100 models with 'waffleback' cases.
