Here's a very nice Martin D-18 Dreadnought Steel String Guitar built during the fall of 1974, in good condition and with its original blue molded hard shell case.
This example is in good condition with a good neck angle. It plays well, and it has been played as evidenced by the pick marks on the bass side of the soundhole. This use has allowed its voice to develop, and it sounds quite good. A small back crack was glued and cleated some time ago. The finish has developed a fair amount of natural lacquer checking over the years.
Sold with its original blue molded Martin branded hard shell case, which contains an Oasis humidifier.
The Martin 'D' series, at first the D-18 and D-28 - appeared in regular production in 1931, but with 12-fret necks and slotted pegheads. Within two years, the lines shifted to solid pegheads and 14-fret necks, which improved their attraction.
As country and bluegrass players went on radio, these guitars became immensely popular as they projected both volume and bass and could keep up with banjos and mandolins. Now, the Dreadnought is perhaps the most copied guitar design.
Materials and Construction
As a 'Style 18' guitar, the Martin D-18 pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Mahogany for - well, almost everything else except for the bridge, fingerboard and head plate. The sides, back, neck, body blocks and linings are Mahogany, with a small amount of Maple for the back's center strip. The fingerboard, bridge and head plate are Indian Rosewood.
For hardware, Martin installed a set of Grover Roto-Matic tuners. At one point this guitar had an undersaddle pickup with a battery clip attached to the neck block. The clip is still there, but the pickup has been removed.
