Built during 2019, this Martin Custom Shop 00-18 12-fret neck model bumps up the standard design with a Carpathian spruce top and Sinker Mahogany for the sides and back.
This example is in very good, clean condition with very light wear. Fret wear is slightly visible, and would be undetectable with simple polishing. The guitar plays well and cleanly with a comfortable action. The neck profile is described on the build sheet as 'modified V modern 30's style heel', and it fits nicely into the hand.
The 00 size delivers moderate volume with a good tonal balance and more midrange than bass, very good for fingerstyle and early country / folk styles.
The included case is a very nice, recent, black double arched TKL hard shell containing its keys.
Materials and Construction
The 00 or 'Grand Concert' body size is one of Martin's oldest, dating to at least 1877, and has been in constant production with the neck changing from 12-fret to 14 fret starting in 1932 and shifting fully to 14 frets around 1934. This shift alters the body shape somewhat, flattening the upper bouts.
The stock Martin 00-18 follows the standard 'Style 18' pairing of a Sitka Spruce top with Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks and neck. The bridge and unbound fingerboard are Ebony, and the head plate is Indian Rosewood. Since 1934, the standard neck joins the body at the 14th fret and the headstock is solid.
This, however, is a Martin Custom Shop 00-18 12-fret neck, and it has some differences in materials and construction. The top is Carpathian Spruce, with scalloped Sitka bracing. The sides and back are Sinker Mahogany, which can add warmth and resonance to the guitar tone.
The neck is a 12-fret, slotted peghead design. The 12-fret neck places the bridge closer to the vibrating center of the top, and the slotted peghead allows for greater downbearing on the nut without increasing the headstock angle.
Hardware is very limited and the Schaller Grand Tune tuners in Nickel finish are also part of the Custom Shop package. The nut and saddle are bone.
