This Marcus Dominelli Classical Guitar with Lutz Spruce & Quilted Maple Double Top model with elevated fingerboard was built during 2013 in Victoria, BC. The elevated fingerboard, a modern innovation pioneered by Thomas Humphrey in 1985, allows increased access to upper registers.
This guitar wears an exceptionally well executed French Polish finish with very light wear: a few tap marks on the treble side of the top and typical light percussion marks from strings, behind the tie block. There is a small finish scratch on the back of the headstock near the B tuner. Overall, this guitar plays well and has a full, decently developed voice. The original double arched case is included, and contains a humidity pack kit and a spec sheet note from the builder to the original purchaser.
Materials and Construction
In very good condition and well designed and built, this lovely guitar uses a number of woods. The Double Top is two layers of Lutz Spruce with a Nomex core, while the sides and back are spectacularly quilted Big Leaf Maple. The body binding and trim are Koa, while the arm rest is described in the included spec sheet as 'a lighter wood', possibly Walnut. The bridge is Cocobolo.
The neck consists of four woods: a center Mahogany core, Spanish Cedar sides, Indian Rosewood for the head plate, and Ebony for the elevated fingerboard.
The headstock connects to the neck via a traditional (though not often used currently) 'Bird's Beak' V joint, providing as much long grain in stress areas for maximum strength.
The tuners are Sloane models, commonly used by Dominelli.
