Description
This Larrivee OM-05 Mahogany Satin is in very good overall condition and was built in 2010 at the North Vancouver shop.
This OM-05 example is part of the “Satin Series” and pairs a Sitka spruce top with mahogany for the sides, back, and neck.
Larrivee's adoption of the OM (Orchestra Model) body dates to the late 1980s, and the OM-05 first appeared around August 1988.
The OM, or Orchestra Model, design itself dates to 1929–1930, when Perry Bechtel, a prominent bandleader, approached the Martin Company for a guitar to aid the shift from banjo—specifically by making the neck 14 frets clear of the body. To accommodate this, Martin took a 000 model, shifted the bridge toward the soundhole, and squared the upper bouts. This proved extremely successful, and within a few years the 14-fret neck was adopted by most guitar makers in the USA.
The OM tends to have a full sound with very even representation throughout the harmonic range and is regarded as one of the better designs for fingerstyle playing.
Materials and Construction
Following Larrivee's usual specifications, the OM-05 Mahogany uses Sitka spruce for the top and bracing, with mahogany for the sides, back, neck, body blocks, and lining. The body is bound in maple, and the rosette features an abalone ring. The pickguard is a smaller teardrop style in faux tortoise.
The bridge and ivoroid-bound fingerboard are ebony. The headstock features a mother-of-pearl Larrivee logo and the silver border binding designed by Tony Duggan-Smith, who was working with Larrivee at the time.
