Part of the Recording Series, the Larrivee OM-03R draws from the classic Orchestra Model design introduced in the early 1930s to aid the great shift to guitar by banjo players.
This Larrivee OM-03R dates to December 15, 2010 and was built at Larrivee’s shop in Vancouver. It’s in overall very good condition, with light fret wear in the low positions and light finish wear, though the satin finish doesn't show much. A strap pin has been installed to the treble side of the heel, and at one point a pin was installed on the bass side, leaving the screw hole.
The original Larrivee hard shell case is included.
Construction and Materials
The Larrivee OM 03R is built using traditional materials. The top is Sitka Spruce with Herringbone purfling and rosette, paired with Indian Rosewood for the back, sides and head plate. Mahogany is used for the body blocks; linings and neck, with Ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard. The body binding is Maple and the fingerboard binding is grained ivoroid. The finish is natural satin. The tuners are sealed Larrivee branded models.
The installed pickup / preamp set is an L R Baggs StagePro Element, with the output jack through the tail block.
The OM body tends to produce a very full, evenly balanced tone with good representation throughout the frequency range.
The key innovation of the OM was the 14-fret neck. Previously, most guitars had 12 frets to the body. As banjos tend to have all the frets clear of the pot, these 'short' necks were seen as limiting.
