This Kenny Hill Curva Negra Crossover Cutaway was built in Hill’s Ben Lomond, California workshop during 1999 and features a Hauser-influenced cutaway body.
Crossovers are often used in non-traditional settings, so this guitar is also equipped with a Schatten HFN-C pickup system and an end-pin jack with active preamp. The controls are mounted to the bass side of the soundhole, and the battery bag is near the neck block.
Overall this guitar is in good physical condition with signs of having been used for its intended purpose. The French Polish finish is naturally light, and the top shows some wear from fingernail pressure like tapping. A Golpeador (thin plastic tap plate) would prevent further damage, and a separate small plate behind the bridge tie block will protect that area.
Sold with a newer black TKL hard shell Case.
As a ‘Crossover’ style instrument, the Kenny Hill Curva Negra has a soft Venetian cutaway allowing increased access to the upper registers, and a very gently crowned fingerboard. These modifications help the guitar fit better into fingerstyle, Jazz, Latin and Bossa Nova genres, as well as traditional Classical styles.
Construction and Materials
Kenny Hill is fundamentally a classical guitar builder, and leans heavily on Spanish style construction. The body to neck joints tend to be integrated, with the sides slotting into the heel rather than using a dovetail or mortise and tenon joint.
The soft Venetian cutaway is of course a major departure from tradition, but offers considerably improved access to the upper registers. As another advancement, this instrument is equipped with an adjustable truss rod, accessed through the sound hole.
This Kenny Hill Curva Negra guitar pairs a Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for sides and back, headplate, bridge and body binding.
The body blocks, neck and linings are Spanish Cedar, with Ebony for the fingerboard. The back linings are solid until they approach the treble side cutaway area, where they are kerfed. The top linings are also a mix of solid and kerfed.
The tuners are Schaller-made, also Hauser style machines with black buttons.
The finish is French Polish. The intent of French Polish is to provide some protection to the instrument while imposing the least limitations on its vibration.
