Description
Here is a definite rarity — a long scale JOI Guitars Custom JM pairing Moon Spruce and Waterfall Bubinga, built late 2016 by Reuben Forsland on Vancouver Island.
Using a modified Jumbo body size and shape with a Venetian cutaway and Laskin armrest, this spectacular instrument delivers an enormous serving of sonic richness and complexity in a clear, well projected voice.
This guitar has an unusually long 25.75 inch (654mm) scale length and a body depth that ranges from nearly four inches to almost five, producing enormous low frequency response.
Reuben Forsland has a one-person shop on Vancouver Island, and builds custom instruments of exceptional quality using exotic, beautiful materials, and proprietary bracing systems.
Sold with its original grey hard shell, JOI branded case containing an instrument care document, keys and a JOI-branded soft plastic sheet intended to protect the top during string changes.
Materials and Construction
While this guitar is built using a number of standard material and building techniques, Forsland also uses unique bracing patterns. The top is Alpine Moon Spruce, which describes a way of harvesting rather than a species. Moon wood is harvested from higher altitudes during the late part of a waning moon, and in late fall or winter when the tree is dormant. The rosette consists of a three-segment veneer inlay between two purfling rings.
The sides, back and neck are Waterfall Bubinga. Bubinga is sometimes referred to as 'African Rosewood' and the 'Waterfall' term describes a type of intense figure within the wood, which is very evident here! The semi-kerfed top and bottom linings and body blocks may also be Bubinga, but without the figuring. The neck joint is a modern style with a mortise, tenon and a single bolt, allowing a much simpler process for a neck reset when that is eventually necessary. The fingerboard is ebony with small concentric-circle position markers and side dots. The bridge is Ebony. The strings load from the rear of the bridge, and a plastic guard is provided to protect the top. The nut and saddle are bone and well fitted.
For hardware, the tuners are a Graph-Tech Ratio set in black. There are no electronics!
