This Ibanez GB20 George Benson model was built during 1981 for Ibanez by Terada at Nagoya, Japan. It's in excellent, clean condition with only the lightest wear. It plays well, and is currently strung with flatwounds. The original flight-style case is included.
The Ibanez George Benson GB20 has been in production since 1977, launched with the two-pickup GB10. Other versions of the model have followed over the years and they are as practical as when introduced.
The Ibanez GB20 George Benson model features a single 'floating' GB special Passive/Alnico mini-humbucking pickup attached to the fingerboard end, in the 'Johnny Smith' style. Other models such as the more common GB10 have two pickups, one mounted on the pickguard by the bridge. The hardware is all gold coloured; the tuners are Ibanez Velvet Tune models with faux-pearl buttons, the tailpiece is split with tension adjustments for treble and bass strings. The nut is a combination of bone and brass, the idea being that the brass front can provide a better tonal match to fretted notes. Most of the visible wear is to the plating on the bridge! Fret wear is very light, and it's strung with flatwounds.
Around 1977, the great American Jazz guitarist George Benson entered into a collaboration with Ibanez to produce a series of signature archtop electric guitars, including the Ibanez George Benson GB20, GB10 and its fancier sisters. These guitars were immediately popular with other jazz players, because the design addresses real needs. The body is comfortably compact, and while its hollow, F-hole body design provides real archtop resonance, responsiveness and 'thump', the spruce top is thickly arched to dramatically reduce feedback at performance volumes. The sides, back and neck are Maple, with Ebony for the bound fingerboard and bridge base.
