Description
This beautiful Heiden A-Style Standard F-Hole Mandolin in a Walnut stained varnish finish dates to 2018 at Creston, BC and is in very good, clean condition.
This spectacular instrument features an Adirondack Red Spruce top and a back carved from a single piece of Sugar Maple. The workmanship and finishing are of the highest level, as are the hardware selections. This is a fully acoustic instrument, there are no installed electronics.
Wear is very light throughout. There is light fret wear but the varnish finish has been very well kept.
The original, hand built in Canada and very good Main Stage hardshell fiberglass touring case is included.
Heiden A-Style Standard F-Hole Mandolin Construction and Materials
This Heiden A-Style Standard, F-hole mandolin uses three main woods: Adirondack Red Spruce, Sugar Maple, and Ebony.
The top is Adirondack Red Spruce, and as Heiden is well known for reclaiming woods from various sources (often architectural) it is very possible that it came from such a source and as such would be well over 100 years old. This would increase stability, lower moisture content and crystallize the wood's resin content.
The back is Sugar Maple, carved from a single piece. The sides and neck are also Sugar Maple.
The fingerboard, bridge and finger-rest are all handmade from Ebony.
For hardware, a top-grade set of Schaller GrandTune mandolin tuners with ivoroid buttons were chosen. These are some of the very best available. The Heiden-engraved tailpiece is by Bill James, and is considered by some as one of the best mandolin hardware innovations since the 1920s. It incorporates a hinged cover, machined aluminum construction, and integrated dampers for the cover and strings.
