This G. W. Barry steel string guitar is in good condition, was built during 1985 at Barry’s Toronto shop and is an early example of his post-apprenticeship Toronto work after several years with Jean Larrivee in British Columbia.
This well-built guitar has been played over the years and is in overall good condition with some bumps and light scratches, but nothing structural. Fret wear is light. As noted below, its original bridge was recently removed and replaced by the builder. It plays well and comfortably, and its voice has fully developed to deliver an even representation throughout its range.
Sold with what may be its original flat-top hard shell case.
Construction and Materials
This G. W. Barry steel-string guitar shows many Larrivee influences, in particular the classical proportions of its body. Larrivee began his building career with classicals and learned much from highly regarded German master luthier Edgar Monch during his years in Toronto. The Larrivee 'L' body's classically influenced proportions deliver an evenly balanced, full response.
The guitar is built in the Western steel string manner, pairing an X-braced Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the sides, back and head plate. The body blocks, linings and slotted-peghead neck are Central American Mahogany and the neck joint is a dovetail. The bridge and unbound 25.7 inch scale fingerboard are Ebony. The body binding is Maple.
The headstock features an inlay taken from a family crest, of a stylized person holding a spear, executed in Mother of Pearl, Abalone and Mahogany. The center section of the soundhole rosette is two Abalone rings.
The tuners are a Schaller set with faux-pearl buttons, plate mounted with oversize rollers for the slotted peghead. This set is long out of production.
A pickup and preamp set was installed, the transducers to the bridge plate and the preamp and standard 9v battery to the neck block.
This guitar has been recently serviced by G. W. Barry with a new Ebony bridge and bone saddle, and plays well.
