The Gretsch G6136-1958 Stephen Stills Signature Falcon first appeared in 1999 as a custom version of the 1958 model. The differences are primarily found in the neck - the nut is a bit wider and the profile is more 'V' than 'C' shaped.
This Gretsch G6136-1958 Stephen Stills Signature Falcon dates to 2005 and is in very good, clean condition and plays well. The original Gretsch-branded hard shell case is included and contains the pickguard, truss rod adjuster tool, original warranty sheet envelope, QC card and hang tags.
Gretsch introduced the White Falcon at the 1954 NAMM show as a flashy one-off display model, showing off Gretsch glamour. However, this demonstrator guitar attracted so much attention that it was immediately put into production as the top of the line. In the mid 1960's these guitars became very popular with artists including Neil Young and Steven Stills, and later with Billy Duffy of The Cult.
Built as a full-sized, fully hollow archtop electric guitar, the Gretsch White Falcon uses Maple laminate for the body and Maple for the neck, with Ebony for the fingerboard. The 17-inch wide body is braced with tone bars running the length of the body, and there is a post beneath the bridge area running from the top to back. This bracing pattern was used until 1959, when 'Trestle' bracing appeared providing better feedback resistance.
The body, f-holes, fingerboard and headstock are bound with gold sparkle strips. The pickguard uses a gold backing. All the hardware is gold plated and the finish starts as gloss white. The 'Neo-Classic' thumbnail style position markers and the Steven Stills signature at the end of the fingerboard are Mother of Pearl.
To 1957, the Falcon used deArmond DynaSonic single coil pickups, and the new hum-cancelling Filter 'Tron pickups appeared in 1958.
Here's the builder on the Gretsch G6136-1958 Stephen Stills Signature Falcon:
"This instrument mirrors Stephen Stills' original Falcon™ right down to its aged finish. Features include a maple body with gold-sparkle binding and oversize F-holes, three-piece maple neck, ebony fingerboard with Neo-Classic™ inlays and Stills' signature inlaid between the 18th and 21st frets, dual High Sensitive Filter'Tron™ humbucking pickups, classic tone-switch circuitry, Falcon volume knobs with red rhinestone markers, Grover® Imperial™ tuners, gold sparkle Gretsch headstock logo, gold-plated adjustable bridge and Bigsby® B6G vibrato tailpiece."
