Here’s a very clean, all-original Gretsch G6128T Duo Jet Black Electric Guitar from 2013, with vintage-style Bigsby B3 V-cut tailpiece, Space Control bridge and Grover Sta-Tite open gear tuners. This model uses the 1959-style electronics layout with two Filter ‘Trons, a pickup selector, tone selector, plus individual and master volume controls. How these work is detailed in an included sheet.
The Gretsch Duo Jet features a chambered Mahogany body with a Maple Laminate top, a mahogany neck and Ebony for the bridge base and bound fingerboard. Wear is negligible, mostly consisting of a few light marks to the rear control access panel. Fret wear is light. This example is in very good condition with very light wear. It is sold with the original hard shell case. The case is in matching condition with the original truss rod adjuster, case key, Gretsch documentation, and QC checkoff sheet dated 7-3-13 identifying this as a G6128T. The serial number was applied to the guitar, under the finish, during June of 2013. The first two letters indicate its physical origin (Japan and the Terada plant at Nagoya), while the first four digits indicate the year and month of production.
This Gretsch G6128T Duo Jet plays very well and sounds great. Duo Jets are one of my favourite yet often underrated models. They are compact, durable and reasonably lightweight with a huge range of tones. They fit well in almost any style of music, from straight country to arena rock! The Gretsch G6128 Duo Jet -- then just the 6128 with no "G" -- first appeared in 1953 as a response to the Gibson Les Paul, with the intention to provide the same feedback resistance but with chambering to give archtop-like resonance.
Original Jet models used DeArmond DynaSonic pickups. Chet Atkins was a key endorser of Gretsch guitars, and like every other player had continual issues with 60-cycle hum. Chet had discussions with his friend Ray Butts at Gretsch, and in 1957 Ray developed and patented a unique hum-cancelling design designated the Filter ‘Tron. This appeared at the same time as Seth Lover at Gibson patented their humbucking pickup. Filter 'Tron pickups are crisp, clean and clear with plenty of definition and separation. The Filter ‘Tron design works well with both clean and overdriven amp setups, as can be heard in the late Malcolm Young’s rhythm guitar work on any AC/DC tune.
