The Gretsch G6040 Synchromatic Archtop electric guitar was built from 1994 to 2013 in limited numbers and based on the 1940's 400C Synchromatic, adding a cutaway, Filter'Tron pickup, and reducing the body width to 17 inches from 18. This is a full sized guitar! The full model designation is '6040MCSS', and expands to model 6040, Maple, Cutaway, Solid Spruce top.
One of the things that visually distinguishes these guitars is the use of 'Cat's Eye' soundholes, rather than the traditional F style. Key components have 'Art Deco' touches, notably the use of Grover Imperial tuners with stair step buttons and the curved, stepped bridge base.
This example dates to February 2009 and was built at the Terada plant in Nagoya, Japan. Very well made, it is in excellent condition with only very light wear. I can't see much finish wear at all, but there is light fret wear.
The original Gretsch hard shell case is included with keys and truss rod wrench. Also included is an alternative pickguard and vertical-mount pot set.
Materials and Construction
Following standard designs, the Gretsch G6040 Synchromatic Archtop has a full 17 inch wide body pairing a solid, carved Spruce top with laminate Figured Maple for the sides and back. The neck is two-piece maple with two extra pieces for headstock 'wings'. Ebony is used for the bound fingerboard and movable bridge. The inlays are Mother of Pearl, as are the headstock logos.
Hardware is gold plated, including the Grover Imperial tuners with stair step buttons, Gretsch harp tailpiece, and a single Filter'Tron pickup in the neck position. The volume and tone controls are mounted on the pickguard and the output jack is on the lower treble side.
