Here's a fairly rare guitar - a Baldwin era Gretsch Deluxe Chet Model 7680 archtop electric guitar from 1973 in Autumn Red finish. In walnut finish, this was the 7681. The Gretsch Deluxe Chet was built in Booneville, Arkansas between 1972 and 1974 as a simplified version of the Super Chet.
Materials and Construction
The Gretsch Deluxe Chet is a fully hollow, 17 inch wide archtop with 2.67 inch deep sides, longitudinal tone bars and a wide post under the bridge. The body is Maple laminate, and the neck is two piece Maple, carrying a bound Ebony fingerboard. The characteristic Gretsch Neo-Classic or 'Thumbnail' position markers are Mother of Pearl.
The Maple Laminate top features bound F-holes and the body has one, close to two, cutaway. The upper bout curves in to meet the heel at an acute angle, but not quite enough to be a full cutaway.
Note the triangular plate on the back at the heel - it covers a Baldwin style right-angle truss rod adjustment.
For electronics, the Gretsch Deluxe Chet carries its original black-top Filter 'Tron pickups. These are slightly different from previous Filter 'Tron models. The pickup cover tops lack the center sections normally stamped with patent numbers, and there is a black plastic covering. As well, the magnets may be a brighter Ceramic rather than Alnico V. These lead to individual volume and tone controls, three-way pickup selector, and a Master volume.
The rest of the hardware includes a set of gold plated Schaller tuners and gold Gretsch Bigsby tailpiece. The bridge is a replacement gold Tune-O-Matic style model and the original is long gone. The Gretsch-branded Bigsby B6G is original with expected wear to the plating on the arm. The Gretsch style screw-on strap buttons are included.
This vintage guitar is in overall good condition, with some wear on the back of the neck.
The original Gretsch hard shell case is included.
