This Greco-Zemaitis GZMF 301 Metal Front was built in late 2009 by Greco under license from Tony Zemaitis and, following his death in 2002, his family.
Around the year 2000, as he neared retirement from a career producing bespoke instruments for rock royalty, Tony Zemaitis wanted to extend the availability of his unique designs. He was approached by Greco's parent company, Kanda Shokai, with a licensing agreement ensuring strict adherence to his original methods and specifications.
The Greco-Zemaitis GZMF 301 seen here - the name expands to Greco Zemaitis Metal Front 301 - is a product of that agreement. It is an excellent guitar in every way. The materials, components and construction are all top quality and it has a unique visual impact. It is in very good, clean condition with only light wear to the finish, frets, and engraved Duralumin plates. It balances well and plays very nicely.
Sold with its original hard shell case.
Materials and Construction
Following the original designs, this guitar uses a Mahogany body and set neck, with an unbound Indian Rosewood fingerboard featuring a classic Zemaitis diamond inlay cluster at the 12th and 13th frets. The top of the guitar is almost entirely covered in an engraved Duralumin plate.
On original Zemaitis guitars, the engraving was done by Danny O'Brien. Hand engraving was not a practical option for these licensed instruments, so O'Brien was hired to create the patterns and oversee a process of chemical acid-etching and computer-numerical-control (CNC) laser engraving. This was used to create the front plate, back control cover plates, truss rod cover, and diamond Zemaitis logo on the headstock. The head plate itself is phenolic.
The hardware starts with stock Schaller M6 tuning machines, but the bridge, tailpiece, pickup rings and control knobs are custom Zemaitis designs built by Greco.
For electronics, DiMarzio PAF pickups were chosen and are wired in a typical individual volume/tone and pickup selector circuit. The output jack is on the side.
