Introduced in 2011, the Gibson USA Midtown Standard with Bigsby was built until 2012, along with the stop-tail Midtown Custom in Nashville built until 2016.
From 2012 to 2014, several other variants appeared. The Midtown Standard P-90 used a stop tail and P-90s, the 34 inch scale Midtown Bass with a 'mudbucker' and mini humbucker, and in 2014 the Midtown Standard 12-String.
While all used a chambered Maple and Mahogany body construction, fingerboard materials varied from Ebony to Richlite and Indian Rosewood.
This Gibson USA Midtown Standard with Bigsby sports a Faded Red finish and dates to Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Nashville, so it is a first-year example. The 'With Bigsby' optional package also adds fingerboard binding and a Mother of Pearl headstock logo. It is in very good, clean condition with only light wear.
The original Gibson hard shell case is included.
Materials and Construction
The Gibson Midtown Standard and Custom bodies start with a block of mahogany, routed out to form chambers, a flat piece of maple with a pair of F-holes is glued to the top which then receives a single layer of binding.
The mahogany neck uses a mortise and tenon 'set neck' joint, shaped to match the cutaway curves. On this early example, the bound fingerboard is ebony with acrylic dot position markers. The head plate is black-dyed Holly, carrying a Mother of Pearl Gibson logo. The truss rod cover is engraved with the word 'Standard'.
Hardware starts with a set of Grover Roto-Matic tuners with metal keystone buttons, in my view a great look. The 'Licensed' Bigsby B70 is paired with a TonePros locking frame roller tune-a-matic type bridge.
A note about the Bigsby B-70: Functionally identical to the classic US-made Bigsby models, these 'licensed' versions are not made in the USA and have metric dimensions. This is important to know if you are considering aftermarket options like a drilled-through string bar. Many aftermarket parts are made for US dimensioned models only, or specifying licensed or original is required.
Electronics are simple and start with a pair of '57 Classic humbuckers. These connect to the three-way toggle switch, then to master Volume and Tone controls and the output jack.
