This Norlin-era Gibson SG Standard in Walnut finish was built in Kalamazoo during 1975 and is in good original condition including the 'Tarback' pickups.
This lovely vintage guitar is in overall good physical and playing condition, and it has been played. Fret wear is moderate but the finish wear is light considering the guitar is half a century old!
There is a small crack in the body leading from the upper bass side neck pickup trim ring screw to the cutaway. It does not seem structural.
Sold with a non-original brown hard shell case.
Materials and Construction
As Norlin made changes to the Gibson line, the SG Standard shifted to a design with durability improvements. The Standard paired a 3-piece Mahogany body and 3 piece mahogany neck with bound Indian Rosewood fingerboard sporting Mother of Pearl block position markers. The neck has a volute and 14 degree headstock pitch, both intended to reduce headstock damage.
Hardware starts with a set of Gibson-branded Schaller M6 tuners with metal keystone buttons, harmonica bridge, stop tailpiece. Small vintage style pickguard.
Electronics appear to be original, beginning with a set of 'Tarback' pickups - the Gibson "Super Humbuckers" designed by Bill Lawrence. In an effort to modernize the line, Lawrence made these pickups significantly hotter while retaining top-end clarity by using a smaller number of coil winds and stronger Indox 7 ceramic magnets. These are followed by an original set of 300K individual volume and tone pots, a Switchcraft three-position switch, and the output jack. The 'Barrel' style speed knobs are original.
