Here's a Gibson Les Paul Standard Cherry Sunburst dating to October 17, 1980, sporting a Cherry Sunburst finish and a non-weight relieved, non-pancake body!
The Les Paul model was introduced in 1952 as Gibson's entry into the then-new solidbody 'Spanish' electric guitar field, where 'Spanish' refers to the way the guitar is held. Solidbody Hawaiian models had been available for some time, and Gibson had been producing electrified archtop guitars since the 1936 ES-150.
Possibly the first solidbody Spanish electric guitar was made by Rickenbacher (soon to be Rickenbacker), the Rickenbacher Electro Model B launched in 1935.
For the 1958 model year, Gibson (and Gretsch) introduced new patented hum-cancelling pickups, and the 'new' Les Paul Standard model was the first Gibson solidbody to receive them - and this model also received a sunburst finish. At the time, these sold so poorly that for 1961 the design was radically changed to what became the Gibson SG. The traditional single-cut, carved top Les Paul design was not re-introduced until 1968.
Here we're looking at a 1980 Gibson Les Paul Standard in Cherry sunburst, with a one-piece Mahogany back and two-piece Maple cap, Mahogany neck with a Volute and Indian Rosewood fingerboard. This guitar is in overall good condition. The original Gibson Deluxe tuners have been replaced with Grover Roto-Matics but otherwise the hardware seems original. The frets are original, with moderate fret warm, but it plays well as is. The finish is original with natural play wear on the bass and treble sides of the neck. There's also a rectangular spot on the back where the lacquer finish interacted with something, perhaps a pad or sticker.
The original Gibson hard shell case is included.
