The Gibson Les Paul Special DC in Heritage Cherry was offered during 2015 with the 'Les Paul 100' headstock logo and hologram marks Les Paul's 100th birthday.
This guitar is in very good but not entirely original condition. These models were shipped with Tronical Robot tuners and a set of standard Gibson Deluxe tuners. The original owner removed and discarded the Robot tuners and installed the alternate set. As well, the original black P-90 pickups, switch tip and knobs were replaced with creme covered diMarzio P90 soapbar sized humbuckers, a cream switch tip and gold top hat knobs. Those replaced parts are included. The adjustable 'zero fret' nut is original and useful, making action adjustments easier.
The Gibson Les Paul Special DC is a fun guitar to play, and sounds great. It's no wonder they were very popular.
Sold with its original brown Gibson branded Gig Bag, containing the original pickups, switch tip and knobs.
Construction and Materials
The Gibson Les Paul Special DC, as with its previous single-cut version, uses a slab body with a set-neck. Both body and neck are Mahogany, and the bound fingerboard is Indian Rosewood.
The hardware and electronics are simple. A set of Gibson Deluxe tuners with plastic keystone buttons are installed, replacing the original Robot tuners. The nut is Gibson's adjustable zero fret model, and has two hex-head 'grub' screws to adjust string height. The bridge is a wraparound stop-tail style with intonation ridges. Originally fitted with black covered, soapbar size P-90 pickups, this guitar now has a pair of creme-covered diMarzio DP210 models. The controls consist of a pickup selector, master volume and tone.
Model History
Introduced in 1955 as an intermediate level guitar, the Les Paul Special followed the entry level Les Paul Junior by a year. Both originally had single-cutaway bodies until 1958, when the double-cut design was introduced. In 1961, with the complete redesign of the Les Paul line, the body shapes changed to the SG style and in 1963 renamed to SG Special or Junior. Both models were dropped, or heavily revised and renamed, in 1971. The Les Paul Special DC, or Double Cut, was re-introduced in 1976.
