Introduced in 1969 and offered to 1985, the Gibson Les Paul Deluxe first replaced the Les Paul Standard model. This Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop, like the majority of shipped Deluxes, has mini-humbuckers. Some shipped with full size humbuckers until 1976 when the Standard was re-introduced.
The original finish was the classic Goldtop, but by 1971 Cherry Sunburst and Red were available, in 1972 Tobacco Sunburst and Walnut, and in 1975 Natural and Wine Red were offered. The model was discontinued in 1985.
From the 'Norlin Era', 1969 to 1986, this Gibson Les Paul example was built during 1976 in Kalamazoo Michigan. While the move to Nashville was underway and until 1984, the 001 prefix to the serial number indicates Kalamazoo and Nashville numbers started with 500.
As a 1976 model it features a 'Pancake' body - a Maple cap on a Mahogany layer, a thin Maple layer and then the Mahogany back. The neck is three pieces of Maple (five counting the 'wings' to create the wider headstock), there is a Volute behind the nut, and the bound fingerboard is Indian Rosewood. The frets are original, wide and fairly flat, as was the style of the time. There is moderate to heavy fret wear particularly in the lower positions. In those areas there is some fingerboard wear.
The finish is the original Gold Top while the rest of the body and neck have a Natural finish, all nitrocellulose lacquer. As is typical, the gold top shows a fair amount of natural finish checking. On the back, normal 'Buckle Rash' can be seen in the expected areas and is through the finish in two areas. This guitar has been used as intended! The neck finish is also worn but to a lesser degree.
The original Gibson Deluxe tuners have been replaced with a set of top-locking, mid size 406 series Grover Rotomatics. Locking tuners can provide a very small amount tuning stability due to the reduction of wraps around the tuner post but for the most part, they greatly aid faster string changes. The pickups, pots and switch are original but as very often happened, the plastic output jack plate has cracked. A set of Schaller strap locks has been installed.
Sold with a newer Gibson hard shell case.
When the Les Paul model was re-introduced in 1968, the Standard was fitted with a pair of P-90 pickups. In mid-1969, it was renamed to Deluxe, and most often fitted with a pair of mini-humbucking pickups mounted in trim rings looking suspiciously like modified P-90 covers. These pickups originated on Epiphone guitars and had been used on models like the Sheraton, Coronet and Crestwood. They are not the same as the similarly sized Firebird pickups, which have no exposed polepieces' because Firebirds use bar magnets in the center of the coil bobbin rather than below the coil.
