Shown here is a Gibson L-5 Wes Montgomery in Sunburst finish, dated to August 25, 1997 at the Gibson Nashville Custom Shop. This example is in pristine condition with virtually no play wear anywhere. It is currently strung with Thomastik George Benson Flatwounds.
Wes Montgomery was and is still one of the most influential jazz guitarists ever, and relied on a Gibson L-5 CES for most of his working life. Ultimately his last two L-5's were custom built, with the customization mostly being the installation of only a neck pickup. In 1993, Gibson launched the Wes Montgomery model based on those and offered it until 2016.
Gibson, with Lloyd Loar, started building the L-5 in 1922 as the first guitar with F-holes. In 1951, the L-5 gained a pickup and gained the CES (Cutaway Electric Spanish) designation.
The Gibson L-5 Wes Montgomery Archtop is a faithful re-creation of the instrument he custom ordered and used during the 1960’s. This instrument features a 17 inch (432mm) wide body and 25.4 inch (645mm) scale fingerboard, one Classic 57 humbucking pickup at the neck, Ebony base for an ABR-1 style bridge, Mahogany body blocks and linings, carved Spruce top, carved flamed Maple back, maple sides and 5-piece Maple neck with Walnut separators and bound Ebony fingerboard. The block position markers, Gibson logo, flowerpot headstock inlay and bridge base inlay are mother of pearl. The tuners are Gibson-branded Schaller-made M6 models with tulip style metal buttons. All the binding is multi-layer and the hardware is all gold plated.
The original Gibson archtop hardshell TKL-made case is included and is also in very good, clean condition.
