When originally introduced in 1912, the Gibson L-4 appeared as a 16 inch wide, oval hole archtop, switching to F-holes in 1935. The cutaway body L-4C appeared in 1949 and by 1956 had displaced the non-cutaway model. In Gibson's naming convention, the 'C' was dropped some years ago.
The recent Gibson L-4 HSL4 Light Cherry Burst, seen here would have been named as an L-4C, but the label reads 'L-4'. The included Certificate of Authenticity identifies it as 'HSL4' or Historic Series L-4. This is a very attractive instrument, and doesn't just look good.
Dating to February 10 2022 at Nashville, this Gibson L-4 HSL4 sports a nitrocellulose lacquer Light Cherry sunburst on its carved Spruce top, as well as on the laminate, figured Maple sides and back. The Mahogany neck has a light tint over dark filler. The fingerboard is Ebony with Mother of Pearl split-parallelogram position markers, headstock logo and crown. The bridge is also Ebony, with a standard gold plated L-4 tailpiece and gold-plated Gibson Deluxe tuners with plastic keystone buttons.
Since its intended use was as an acoustic archtop, its single gold plated small 'Johnny Smith' type pickup and volume control are mounted to the bound, translucent faux-tortoise pickguard, with the output jack located at the tail block.
This 2022 Gibson L-4 HSL4 is in excellent, clean and original condition with only very light wear. The original Gibson branded hard shell case is included and contains the Certificate of Authenticity and a gold tune-o-matic bridge top, should the player prefer that to the Ebony bridge top.
