This lovely Gibson Hummingbird Original was built during 2020 as an early member of the new Original Collection, replicating the early 1960's look and sound.
When introduced in 1960, the Gibson Hummingbird was positioned just below the top of the line, a spot occupied by the J-200. It was followed by the Southern Jumbo and then the J-45. In 1962, its spot was shared with the new Dove, another square-shoulder model.
This very good condition, complete and original condition example dates to the 66th day of 2020 - March 6th. The Cherry Sunburst finish is in great shape and fret wear is vanishingly light.
The guitar plays well and has a good amount of saddle exposed. On some guitars, having a lot of saddle above the bridge can lead to image as forward pressure on the saddle can split the bridge, a situation often forcing a replacement. However, Gibson's 'reverse belly' bridge puts enough wood ahead of the saddle reinforces this area and this type of damage is rare.
Though it is six years old, this guitar has not been played much and so there is plenty of room for its voice to develop with playing. However, it is already a very good sounding guitar.
The original brown Gibson branded hard shell case is included.
Construction and Materials
The Gibson Hummingbird appeared in 1960 near the top of the lineup, featuring a Martin-style Square Shoulder Dreadnought body with Sitka Spruce for the top and bracing with Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks, linings and neck. Until 1965, Gibson (along with many other builders) commonly used Brazilian Rosewood for fingerboards and bridges. The bridge plate is Maple. For stock hardware, the tuners are Grover Roto-Matics.
The hummingbird has a distinctive feature, a fairly thick, hand-painted pickguard that provides, as some at the company have put it, a degree of 'natural compression'.
For decoration, the Hummingbird uses Mother of Pearl for the headstock Gibson and Crown logos, the split-parallelogram position markers and two dots on the bridge that cover locating pins.
Recognizing the needs of modern players, the Gibson Hummingbird, along with other models, has a LR Baggs VTC pickup and preamp system factory installed. This uses an under-saddle sensor and a small active preamp powered by a single standard 9v battery. The battery is stored in a small bag attached to the neck block, and the volume/tone controls are mounted under the bass side of the sound hole and leading to an end-pin jack.
