Introduced in 1960 as the company's first square-shoulder (Martin style) dreadnought, the Gibson Hummingbird sat just below the J-200 as a Deluxe model.
Presented here is a 1967 Gibson Hummingbird Natural, originally shipped as a Factory Second due to a finish blemish that at this point is unidentifiable. As such, there is a '2' impressed below the serial number. This practice ceased in 1985 as company ownership changed.
Aside from the addition of a strap button on the heel, this example is in complete and original condition. There is some normal play-related finish wear to the back, natural lacquer checking, and there are no visible cracks or repairs.
This guitar is in overall good condition, plays well, and has the full, rich yet sparkling sound associated with Gibson steel strings.
Sold with a later, non original hard shell case.
Materials and Construction
Like many other Gibson steel string acoustics, the Gibson Hummingbird paired a Sitka Spruce top with Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks, linings, and neck. The bound fingerboard is Rosewood, and as this is a 1967 model Indian Rosewood was used. The headstock logo and crown inlays, the fingerboard split-parallelogram position markers, and the two dots on the bridge covering the locating bolts are Mother of Pearl. The headstock veneer itself is dyed Holly.
The bridge, like the fingerboard, is Indian Rosewood. For this version of the Hummingbird, it is quite a large component. Underneath, the bridge plate is Maple and is in good condition. As with many of Gibson's acoustic guitars after 1956, the saddle is adjustable, and in this case is Rosewood. (Gibson had also used a white ceramic saddle in earlier builds).
The pickguard is one of the most visible elements of the Hummingbird. It is engraved and then hand-painted, and this process applies to the J-200 and Dove as well. For a short time in 1967 and 1968, Gibson chose to mount the thick pickguard with six small screws rather than glue, in order to prevent curling at the edges.
