The Gibson Flying V Faded was built for the decade from 2002 to 2012, a stripped-down version delivering a high quality working instrument at reduced cost. Most were finished in a thin, faded Cherry Nitrocellulose Lacquer, though some black models were produced.
This Gibson Flying V Faded example carries serial number 109510386, dating it to April 05, 2011 at Nashville, TN. It’s in very good shape light, resonant and plays well, and has the unmistakable look and feel of a Flying V.
A non-original rectangular hard shell case is included.
Construction and Condition
The Gibson Flying V Faded is a simple and effective design. This example is in very good, all original condition with only light play wear. There are one or two small dents around the edges of the V.
The body and neck are Mahogany with Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard set with Mother of Pearl dot position markers.
The hardware is straightforward: a standard ABR type tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece set are installed in place of the original V-plate string-through design, and a set of Gibson Deluxe tuners are at the headstock. The electronics are classic Gibson, with a pair of uncovered humbucking pickups controlled by a pickup selector, individual volume controls, and a master tone. The pickups used were a 496R at the neck and 500T at the bridge, both with ceramic magnets.
Uncovered humbuckers simply lack the traditional protective nickel or chrome plated covers Gibson first used in 1957 and installed as stock until the mid 1980's. In the mid-1960s, some players removed the covers in search of slightly more output — a change that proved minimal in tone but dramatic in appearance. This look proved popular and remains a common option regardless of pickup maker. Covers can usually be installed if desired.
Model History
The Flying V appeared in 1958, along with the Explorer and almost mythical Moderne, under the direction of Gibson President Ted McCarty. Unfortunately, none of these ultra-modern designs caught on; the Flying V was dropped after one year and the Explorer was built until 1963. Perhaps one or two Modernes may have been built, but it did not enter production at the time. Very limited numbers of Modernes have been 'reissued' since 1981.
As decades pass, times and styles change, and these ‘futuristic’ Gibson designs – except the Moderne – have since become some of the most popular, sought after and copied instruments.
