First introduced at the Memphis plant in 2007, the Gibson ES-339 thinline archtop electric guitars preserves the scale length of the ES-335 but reduces the body size. Still in production, the ES-339 uses the same construction principles and materials as the ES-335 series. These semi-hollow models were built almost exclusively at the Memphis plant until it was closed in 2019.
Available here is a Gibson ES-339 in Cherry finish, built at the Memphis plant during 2008. It is in very good, clean condition with only minor play wear. The top and back use a nicely figured Maple laminate. Fret and fingerboard wear are very light. There is no appreciable tarnish or corrosion on the metal hardware.
The original Gibson Custom hard shell case is included, and contains the keys, Certificate of Authenticity, truss rod wrench, and extra knobs.
The ES-339's body size reduction narrows the body width and length by about two inches, just over 5cm. This improves the usability of the instrument for players in more restricted spaces or who want or need a physically smaller guitar that has the same playability and tone as the larger models.
There have been two main but unusual variants of the design. The ES-336, which introduced the concept in 1996, used a carved Maple top on a one-piece, chambered Mahogany section routed to form the back sides and center block; in 2001 this morphed into the CS-336. The ES-337 paired the standard ES-339 back and sides with a carved Maple top.
Materials and Construction
The Gibson ES-339 closely follows the design and construction of the ES-335. The top, back and sides are figured Maple laminate, with a Maple center block. The body blocks, linings and neck are Mahogany, with a bound Indian Rosewood fingerboard. Position markers are Mother of Pearl dots, and the headstock Gibson logo and crown are also Mother of Pearl.
The fretwire is a Medium Jumbo size, and on many of these binding still covers the fret ends. For a short time on some models, Memphis used a different fretting technique that levelled the binding to the fingerboard surface and extended the fretwire to the outside edge of the binding.
Hardware consists of a set of Gibson Deluxe Kluson-style tuners, with plastic Keystone buttons. The bridge is a wired ABR-1 style tune-o-matic, and a standard stop tailpiece follows.
Electronics include a set of '57 Classic humbuckers through a standard two-volume, two tone circuit, three-way switch in a convenient position, and the output jack on the side.
