Built from 1947 to 1956, the Gibson ES-350P Premier Archtop Electric Natural (for Premier, top of the line) was the cutaway version of the 1940 - 1952 ES-350 non-cutaway archtop electric. These came to be transitional instruments, as musical performances moved away from strictly acoustic (by necessity!) and towards electrified amplification in ever-larger venues. These guitars looked much like their forebears, but had pickups - and with them, Maple laminate tops to reduce feedback.
Starting with a full 17 inch wide body, the Gibson ES-350P in its introductory year used a single P-90 pickup in the neck position. In the absence of a serial number, label or FON (Factory Order Number), the single pickup is how this example, originally purchased in Dublin, Ireland, is known to be a 1947 model. The rear of the headstock has a 'Made in USA' stamp, usually applied to models intended for export sale. A second P-90 pickup was added in 1948 for greater tonal versatility.
The Gibson ES-350P body is constructed of Maple laminate for feedback resistance, with Mahogany for the body blocks and linings. The neck is two pieces of Maple with a Walnut layer between the two, and it carries a bound, Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard. The bridge is also Brazilian. The headstock has a black front (Gibson often uses dyed Pearwood for this veneer) and a black backstrap and stinger. Headstock inlays and split-parallelogram position markers are Mother of Pearl. For hardware, the original Kluson tuners are mounted; the tailpiece was changed about 25 years ago. The electronics appear to be original, a single P-90 pickup runs through a single volume and tone control through a side-mounted jack. The original pickguard is long gone, removed due to deterioration, and the mounting hardware is in the original case. The neck was professionally re-fretted around 2014 and wear is minor.
The nitrocellulose lacquer finish is original and in good shape with natural and expected checking.
Overall this wonderful instrument is in very good, clean condition and plays well and cleanly. It has a big voice with lots of bottom end. Wear on the current frets is minor, and this is ready to play for years to come.
Sold with its original brown hard shell double arched case.
