Presented here is a very good condition Nashville built Gibson ES-335 Dot Tobacco Sunburst from 1991, with its pickguard autographed by BB King in gold ink.
The 1991 Gibson ES-335 Dot is well-regarded in the history of the model for various reasons. By 1991, Gibson's "Good Wood" era had begun, wood supplies were replenished and stocks contained well-figured Maple laminates along with high-grade Mahogany and dense Indian Rosewood. The 'Dot' design itself draws from the original, ground-breaking late 1950's, early 1960's ES-335 models but adds modern tweaks such as a 'Medium C' neck and '57 Classic pickups. Some early 1991 models used Bill Lawrence HB-R/HB-L pickups.
This Gibson ES-335 Dot dates to February 4, 1991, and was crafted at the Nashville, Tennessee facility. (At this time, a second plant, Gibson Acoustic in Bozeman, MT had opened in 1989 under the leadership of master luthier Ren Ferguson. The Memphis plant would not open for another nine years).
This excellent instrument is in very good, clean condition with only light, age-appropriate wear and aging effects throughout. Fret and finish wear are negligible, while the original nitrocellulose lacquer is naturally oxidizing into a warm, light satin patina.
The 'Case Made in Canada' arched-top hard shell case is a period correct, ES-335 style by TKL, Gibson's longstanding OEM case supplier. The original warranty / QC check card is included in the neck pocket.
A unique aspect of this guitar is that its pickguard bears the autograph of the late, great B. B. King. The guitar is accompanied by three photographs, for privacy reasons available to interested parties, of B. B. King and the guitar's current owners holding the pickguard. The autograph, written with a fine-point gold ink pen, is quite legible and in excellent condition. Should the purchaser wish to play the guitar and preserve the autograph, framing the signed guard and installing a new stock part would be a simple, practical and recommended option.
