Shown here is one of the cleanest, best preserved Gibson ES-175 Tobacco Sunburst Electric Guitar models we've seen; built during 1959 at Kalamazoo it looks nearly new. There are a few small marks around the body, but the finish is in great condition with some aging seen in the yellowed binding and virtually no lacquer checking. The original Kluson tuners have been replaced. Fret wear is minimal and the guitar plays well and cleanly.Sold with its original brown hard shell case, which has the most wear - the handle is damaged.
The ES-175 was introduced in 1949 and rapidly became the workhorse guitar for countless jazz guitarists. From 1949 to 1953, it had a single P-90 at the neck; for 1953 a second pickup was added to the bridge position and this dual-pickup model was named the ES-175D. In 1957, Gibson's new humbucking pickup started to appear in production instruments and replaced the P-90s in both ES-175 versions. Ultimately, this model went out of production in 2019.
The Gibson ES-175 construction follows Gibson's pattern for electric archtops, with laminate maple top and back for feedback resistance. Mahogany is used for the sides, body blocks and neck. The floating bridge and bound fingerboard are Rosewood, and until the later 1960's that meant Brazilian Rosewood. Electronics are Gibson's typical layout, with a single PAF humbucking pickup, volume and tone controls, and a side-mounted output jack. Tuners are Kluson Deluxe models with keystone buttons and the tailpiece has the "T" in the center and zigzag tubes on the sides - this tailpiece appeared in 1958.
